The Self Centre Is Now Offering Massage Therapy Continuing Education
Something new is happening at The Self Centre, and it is not a new service or a new treatment room. It is something we have been thinking about for a long time.
We are launching a massage therapy continuing education platform for massage therapists and bodywork practitioners. The first course is available online now, and more are on the way. Here is why we built it, what it covers, and what we think it means for the profession.
There Is a Gap in Massage Therapy Training That Nobody Talks About
Most massage therapy programs do an excellent job of teaching the physical side of the work. Anatomy, physiology, assessment, technique. Graduates leave with strong clinical foundations and the practical skills to help people with pain, injury, and tension.
What they rarely leave with is a clear framework for what to do when a session becomes something other than physical. When a client cannot relax no matter what technique you use. When emotion surfaces on the table unexpectedly. When the tension under your hands does not respond to mechanical work the way it should. When you sense something is happening in the room that lies outside what you were trained to address.
Every experienced massage therapist knows these moments. Most of them have figured out how to navigate them through instinct, through years of practice, or through their own personal work. Very few have had the opportunity to study what is actually happening in those moments from a clinical perspective, and what to do about it in a way that is grounded, skilled, and clearly within the scope of massage therapy practice.
That is the gap our continuing education platform is designed to fill.
Introducing The Body Informed Practitioner
Our massage therapy continuing education courses are offered through The Body Informed Practitioner, an education brand affiliated with The Self Centre. The courses are created for massage therapists and bodyworkers who want to understand and work skillfully with the nervous system in their practice.
The platform is built on a simple belief: the best hands-on practitioners are the ones who understand what is happening underneath their hands. Not just structurally, but physiologically and neurologically. The tissue you are working with is not separate from the nervous system that governs it. And the nervous system does not leave the room when a client lies down on your table. It is present in every session, shaping what is possible, and responding to everything you do.
Understanding that system and knowing how to work with it rather than around it, changes not only your difficult sessions. It changes all of them.
The First Course: When the Body Speaks
The first course available through The Body Informed Practitioner is called “When the Body Speaks: A Somatic Guide for Bodywork Practitioners.” It is priced at $99 and is available for enrollment now.
This course covers trauma-informed massage therapy from a practical, scope-appropriate perspective. It is not about becoming a therapist or treating trauma. It is about understanding how the nervous system responds to stress, threat, and overwhelm, and how to adjust your care accordingly. It is about knowing how to respond calmly and skillfully when emotion surfaces on the table. It is about the practitioner’s own nervous system and why your own regulation is part of the treatment, not separate from it.
It is written practitioner to practitioner, by someone with a long background in both clinical bodywork and mental health. And it is designed to be used in your very next session, not just understood in the abstract.

Why Massage Therapy Continuing Education Matters More Than the Hours
In most Canadian provinces, massage therapists are required to complete a set number of continuing education hours each year to maintain their registration. Most practitioners fulfill those hours. But fulfilling hours and actually growing as a practitioner are not always the same thing.
The best continuing education does not just teach you a new technique. It changes how you see the work. It gives you a framework that reorganizes what you already know and makes your existing skills more effective. It closes the gap between what you can do with your hands and what you understand about why it works.
Massage therapy is a young profession in many ways, and the body of knowledge available to practitioners is growing quickly. Polyvagal theory, somatic neuroscience, and trauma-informed care have produced genuinely useful clinical insights over the past two decades that are directly applicable to the treatment room. Practitioners who engage with that knowledge become measurably better at what they do.
That is the kind of continuing education we are committed to building at The Body Informed Practitioner.
What Is Coming Next
We are just getting started. The Body Informed Practitioner platform will be expanding with additional courses covering different aspects of nervous system-informed bodywork practice, all designed for massage therapists and bodywork practitioners who want to deepen their clinical skills and bring more to every session they offer.
We will be sharing updates through the blog here at The Self Centre as new massage therapy continuing education courses become available. If you are a practitioner who wants to be notified when new content launches, the best way to stay informed is to enroll in the first course and join our community there.
