Trauma-Informed Massage Therapy
A Practitioner’s Guide to the Nervous System in the Treatment Room
Every massage therapist has met the moment. A client is on the table, the room is quiet, your hands are doing what they have always done, and something happens that lies outside what technique can reach. Muscles that will not let no matter how skilled the work. A held breath. A client who goes very still, or whose eyes fill up without warning, and then apologizes for it.
These are not interruptions to the work. They are the work speaking. Because not everything a person brings to your table is physical. People carry their stress, their grief, their long weeks and hard years into your room, and their bodies hold all of it. The tissue under your hands is holding a story, and sometimes that story surfaces.
Knowing what to do in those moments, calmly, skillfully, and within your scope, is one of the most valuable skills a hands-on practitioner can develop. It is also one that most massage training never directly teaches. This guide is an introduction to that skill: trauma-informed, somatic massage therapy, and the nervous system that lives inside every client you treat.
